Definition

Right aortic arch is a congenital abnormality which has no specific known causes. It may be isolated or it may be associated with other CHD (congenital heart diseases) It is associated with both Tetralogy of Fallot and truncus arteriosus.

Rhe right aortic arch, ascends and descends over the root of the right bronchus instead of over that of the left, and passes down either on the right or left side of the vertebral column. When it descends on the right, the thoracic and or the abdominal viscera are usually transposed and congenital heart disease tends to be more common.. When the aorta descends on the left it is not usually accompanied by transposition of the viscera.

and associated congenital heart disease is uncommon though aberrant left subclavian artery is often present.

The diagnosis can be made with a plain chest X-ray.
